The Doors of Perception
Frank Lisciandro began to photograph The Doors in 1967 and soon became close friends with the reclusive Jim Morrison. He documented the band for three years, creating a candid photo-journal scarcely seen by the public. His photographs take us behind the stage and inside Morrison's private life. Bobby Klein was the first official photographer of the band and followed them throughout their career, providing a visual record of the legendary Jim Morrison and The Doors. Creating the band's first publicity shots in the backdrop of California's landscape, Klein was instumental in establishing the band's mysterious aura that has captivated fans up to this day.

Jocelyn Chaplin: Spirit of Pan
On the 60th Anniversary of the arrival in the UK of the Trinidadian Steel Pan this exhibition explores its spirit and meaning for everyone. Pan also means ALL in Greek. PANAGIA is Mother Earth who is everywhere and in everything. Pan the ancient nature God brought forth music from reeds. Jocelyn Chaplin grew up in Southern Sudan listening to the distant drumming of local villagers most nights, and joining in when she could. She trained in Ghana in the 60’s with the artist Kofi Antubam who combined African traditions with modern approaches. He remains the biggest influence on her art. Later she worked at the Royal College of Art and has exhibited widely in the UK and Greece.

Between the Lines: Bill Harry –
Mersey Beat 50th Anniversary Special

Join us for a special evening with Mersey Beat creator Bill Harry as we look back 50 years to the beginnings of the Mersey Sound and how the magazine helped shaped rock journalism. Liverpool legend and childhood friend of John Lennon, Bill Harry was the creator of Mersey Beat, the hugely important and influential music paper of the 1960’s. The initial concept for the paper came about in the late 50’s, when Bill had been filling pocket notebooks with details of groups, venues and promoters and was surprised how extensive the local scene had become. With the local evening newspaper, and the Liverpool Echo not taking notice, he decided to take matters into his own hands and write about the local rock ‘n’ roll scene. Launched in 1961, Mersey Beat focused on the thriving Liverpool scene and appeared to have a symbiotic relationship with the Mersey bands, and especially with the Beatles, Both helped each other, and it wasn’t long before Liverpool became the most important musical city in the world.

Duffy - A visual record of the photographic genius
Duffy’s newly restored body of work firmly cements his place in British photography as part of the notorious ‘Black Trinity’ that defined the visual language of swinging sixties London. The resulting collection of iconic, rare and unseen works provides a veritable catalogue of 60s and 70s cultural iconography: from Hollywood royalty Michael Caine, Brigitte Bardot and Sidney Poitier; to the greatest rock stars John Lennon, David Bowie and Debbie Harry; through to sixties beauties Jean Shrimpton and Joanna Lumley; the literary legend William Burroughs and many more.

The Birds at BFI Southbank
Transplanting Daphne du Maurier's apocalyptic novella from the English countryside to Northern California, The Birds starts out like a romantic comedy - Tippi Hedren's headstrong socialite pursues Rod Taylor to his coastal retreat - before turning into one of Hitchcock's most controlled exercises in fear and suspense. The apocalyptic theme was unusual for Hitchcock, though not the film's sense of the randomness of terror. With its stunning matte special effects and electronic score, The Birds is Hitchcock at his most experimental.

The Audrey Collection
In his distinguished career as a Hollywood photographer, Bob Willoughby remained unequivocal about his favourite subject Audrey Hepburn. Willoughby was called in to shoot the new starlet one morning shortly after she arrived in Hollywood in 1953. It was a routine commission for Willoughby, but when he met the Belgian-born beauty he was enraptured. Willoughby became a trusted friend, framing her working and home life. His nostalgic, perfectionist, tender photographs seek out the many facets of Hepburn's beauty and elegance. Willoughby's collection, showing her on set, preparing for a scene, interacting with actors and directors, and returning to her private life, embodies one of photography's great platonic love affairs. This is Willoughby's last vintage collection of signed work.

The Free Wheel

"Laura and Clayton's paths crossed in 2004 and discovering their similar passion for music, they soon began gigging together. They both sing, play guitar and generally enjoy tinkling about on all things music-making and the fact that they enjoy a wide range of music makes for a pretty eclectic selection of songs. Although their song-writing styles differ somewhat, there is always a strong emphasis on vocal harmonies and emotive lyrical content. "....producing soulful and tender songs that combine sophisticated song writing with the most beautiful harmonies imaginable."

Wild Rock Doves + Louise Le Gry + My Lonely Ghost
"Wild Rock Doves are a London based 5 piece band, new on the scene with their roots in blues and southern rock but also bring in elements of jazz, and country music. Their live shows have jam band-style improvisation and instrumental songs that will take you on a trip to remember…"

Louise Le Gry is a rare occurrence when an extraordinary and unique new talent appears on the music scene; yet 2009 heralds the arrival of Louise Le Gry. Writing songs that show a maturity way beyond her years, and delivering a fresh and emotive sound that fits perfectly with her captivating voice, Louise Le Gry is mysterious and enigmatic.

My Lonely Ghost - formerly known as Lizzyspit BBC Radio 2 favorite, front woman of My Lonely Ghost has been described as an 'absolutely beautiful' songwriter by Janice Long, and rated as 'well worth playing' by Steve Lemacq, who picked up 3 of her singles from her self-produced album she recorded in her bedroom, in a booth she'd made out of egg box trays.

I will be there in spirit, and Roger has my complete and most loving support. Roger is touring his unique concert version of TOMMY using his faithful presentation of the original work as the backbone for a set of  wider material ...it is wonderful to hear the way Roger and his new band re-interpret the old Who songs.''   Throughout this tour, songs such as 'Pinball Wizard', 'The Acid Queen', 'I’m Free', 'See Me, Feel Me' and 'We’re Not Gonna Take It' promise to transport attendees into the world of this classic album with shuddering intensity and poetic power.    A 1989 tour by The Who saw them reprise TOMMY live; the upcoming DALTREY tour will differ in that all of the album’s songs will be played.

John's Children + Andy Lewis & Friends + Ay Ducane

Stories and myths abound around the legendary, cult, pop-art, mod, 60's band JOHN'S CHILDREN. Known for their wild stage act and some say the fore-runners and godfathers of punk. On a German tour in 1967, it was said they even upstaged The WHO, consequently on this same tour all their equipment was confiscated by the German police and they were then deported. Fortunately before they lost all their equipment they managed to record their first album, ORGASM.... Unfortunately it was banned, as were a string of singles and to top it all, they once boasted a young Marc Bolan on guitar.

John ‘Hoppy’ Hopkins
To coincide with London 60s Week 2011, take a journey from the age of austerity into an era of pop, protest and psychedelia through the lens of roving photojournalist and activist John ‘Hoppy’ Hopkins. The 60s were an exhilarating time and Hoppy was both protagonist and observer in the story, at the vanguard of a generation which broke radically with a conservative past. Founder of legendary psychedelic night club, UFO; cofounder of radical underground newspaper, The International Times; and photographer for Melody Maker, The Times and Peace News, he was well placed to record the revolution as it unfolded.
