The term 'Flower Power' transcends barriers with its simple ideology of non-violence expressed through music, nature and the giving of flowers. The notion of 'the power of the flower' arose in the 60s as young people rejected what they saw as a more violent, complex, controlled world being created by technology and a cold corporate business mentality. Under the twin shadows of Viet Nam and the nuclear bomb, they sought simplicity. So they looked to each other and met in parks and open spaces where they talked and played, listened and danced to acoustic music. Journalists in the 60s called its mild-mannered, seed-bead and flower-wearing proponents 'flower children' and their daytime meetings 'happenings'. Flower Power reached its zenith in the summer of 1967, otherwise known as 'The Summer of Love'.
Flower Power still evokes a sense of solidarity with the natural world, which is even more significant today with our looming environmental crises. We ask you to join us as we celebrate the Flower Power movement with happenings across London. Feel the grass on the soles of your feet as you dance to the rhythms of non-electric instruments. Dress in clothes that allow you the freedom to move to the gentler whispers of Nature in our hard urban landscape. Register your London Flower Power event here. Plant the seed and it will grow.
